Paktel is formally shutting down its TDMA operations (the one with the 0303 prefix) on 18th September 2006. The fast eroding TDMA market has long lost its numbers but the operations were still being carried out for various legal and formal reasons. With its switch to GSM and the subsequent hand over of Pakcom to another party, Millicom will now focus on the GSM market of which it has the least share of.
The other remaining TDMA service, that of Instaphone, is reportedly not planned for a closure any time soon. It is a common guess that the greatest assets of the company – the 800 Mhz frequency band, physical infrastructure and the license for cellular operations in Pakistan will be exploited by the new owners to the maximum commercial advantage by ushering the CDMA2000-based 3G services.
